A Great Yarn is a yarn shop located on Cape Cod, in a charming 1870’s farmhouse in the beautiful seaside village of Chatham, Massachusetts. The name of our shop is a play on our two specialties: fine yarn and knitting products, and quality new and used books. And while we thought a lot about what to call the shop, we put a great deal more effort into making sure that A Great Yarn is a destination for finding the best fibers, the most interesting books, and the friendliest, most knowledgeable staff.
Knitters are “fabric artists.” To fuel their creative passion, we feature a mix of the finest standards such as Madelinetosh, The Fibre Company, Manos, Shibui, Koigu and Mrs. Crosby. We also offer a wide variety of yarns from the finest independent dyes in the world, including Haute Knit, Seven Sisters Artists, Three Irish Girls, and Apple Fiber Company.
Knitting can be intimidating…but, not at A Great Yarn. We offer a friendly, non-judgmental experience, whether you have been making sweaters and shawls for fifty years, or whether you have never 
picked up a pair of knitting needles. We provide classes for beginning knitters, for people who have been at it for a while and want to take things to the next level, and for folks who just want to learn a new technique. We host “open knitting” on Tuesday and Friday afternoons, and on Saturday morning from 10 am to noon. Our open knitting sessions always include an expert consultant knitter to help with any problems you have with your projects. there is no charge for the assistance, and you are not required to purchase our yarn or needles to obtain assistance. We’re here to help.

Mary & Ron Weishaar are the owners of A Great Yarn. Not only have they created community within the walls of their business that they have built together, they also give back to the surrounding homeless community. Every February through March, for 3 months, they have a ‘Knit A Thon’ where panels are knit and then sewn together to create blankets for the Homeless. They work in concert with the Housing Assistance Corporation. They are gearing up for 2020 and would love to have your help. You don’t have to live in Massachusetts to contribute your time and do something good for a good cause.
